Common tourist mistakes and local secrets that will save you time and money in Palma
Taxis at the airport rank use the meter plus supplements (airport fee, luggage, night rate). A pre-booked transfer has a fixed price and your driver waits with your name. No queues, no surprises.
You'll pay up to €3/h (Parc de la Mar). Park in deterrent car parks (Avenidas or Plaza Mayor, €2/h). Tip: On Sundays, the ORA (blue zone) is usually free.
Be careful in La Lonja: it's beautiful but very touristy. For authentic, good-value food, do as the locals: head to Santa Catalina Market.
Don't pay €25 for the red bus. EMT line 4 (public bus) costs €2 and covers the most beautiful stretch: Cathedral, Paseo Marítimo and near the Castle (Pl. Gomila).
Go at 10:00 sharp. Cruise ships arrive around 11:00. NOTE: It closes early (15:15 in winter / 17:15 in summer). Sundays CLOSED for tourist visits.
For artisan ice cream, locals go to 'La Boutique del Gelato' (near Plaza Mayor). Incredible flavours and very generous portions.
Avoid buying them at the airport (pricier and less fresh). Locals buy them the day before from traditional bakeries in the centre (e.g. Forn des Teatre).
Palma is safe, but be careful in crowded areas (Cathedral). Watch out for anyone who "gifts" you a sprig of rosemary: it's a common trick to distract you and ask for money or pick your pocket.
Mallorca Fashion Outlet (Festival Park) has brands at up to 70% off. The train (T1, T2 or T3) leaves from Plaza España and drops you at the door.
Palma's best chocolate shop since 1700. A must-try: ensaimada (or "cuarto") with hot chocolate or their homemade almond ice cream.
Save the entrance fee by visiting the castle on Sundays — it's free for everyone. Locals also use the surrounding forest as the city's "green lung".
Have a cocktail at Ábaco (La Lonja area). It's a spectacular former baroque palace, famous for its decadent decoration with fresh fruit and flowers. Magical.
