Common tourist mistakes and local secrets that will save you time and money in Palma
Taxis from the airport rank use a meter + surcharges (airport fee, luggage, night). To know the exact cost, book a private transfer: it has a fixed price, and they wait for you with no queues.
You'll pay up to €3/hr (Parc de la Mar). Park in peripheral car parks (like Avenidas, €2/hr). Tip: On Sundays, ORA (blue zone) street parking is often free.
Be careful in La Lonja: it's beautiful but very touristy. To eat authentically and at a good price, do as the locals do: go to the Santa Catalina Market.
Don't pay €25 for the red Hop-On bus. The public EMT bus (Line 4) costs €2 and covers the most beautiful part of that route: Cathedral, Seafront, and gets you close to the Castle.
Go right at 10:00 AM. Cruise ship groups arrive around 11:00. NOTE: It closes early (3:15 PM in winter / 5:15 PM in summer). CLOSED to tourists on Sundays.
For artisan ice cream, locals go to 'La Boutique del Gelato' (near Pza. Mayor). Incredible flavours, great price, and very generous scoops.
Avoid buying them at the airport (more expensive, less fresh). Locals buy them the day before at traditional bakeries in the centre (e.g., Forn des Teatre).
Palma is safe, but beware in crowded areas (Cathedral). Watch out for anyone "gifting" you a rosemary sprig: it's a common trick to distract you and ask for money or pickpocket you.
Mallorca Fashion Outlet (Festival Park) has brands with up to 70% off. The train (T1, T2, or T3) leaves from Plaza España and drops you at the door.
Palma's best hot chocolate spot since 1700. A must-try is the ensaimada (or "cuarto") with hot chocolate or their homemade almond ice cream.
Save the entrance fee by visiting the castle on a Sunday—it's free for everyone. Locals also use the surrounding forest as the city's "green lung".
Have a cocktail at Ábaco (La Lonja area). It's a spectacular old baroque palace, famous for its decadent decor with fresh fruit and flowers everywhere. Magical.
